Volunteering (ESL Program)

A few Weeks Ago I drove up to Prospect Park to New Hope Ministries , were they held a FREE ESL program to adults who want to learn English. I LOVE THIS!!

I really do, its such a wonderful program and its available to anyone.

Throughout my years I’ve always heard people say certain things as….”well if they can come here then,  they should learn English” or “if you can’t speak it get out.”  So much goes into learning a new language its not as easy as watching a video . I should know, learning English for me was really hard, specially growing up where no one spoke Spanish. I had to be held back in 3rd grade because they said my English was not good enough.  I will never forgot get that, it was one of the worst feelings , specially at that age. I felt like  I let my self down and now not only did I have to loose all my friends and make new ones,  but I had to repeat a grade.Luckily over time and help from the school I became better. If it wasn’t for the school I really don’t think I would learned English fully until my teens. Now thats what a lot of people need to understand , yes there are programs out there, but they are expensive . Yes you can get Rosetta stone , but you also need someone to practice with someone , it’s a very embarrassing feeling trying to have a conversation and not knowing the English word for the word that follow. My mom will tell you she has been in this country since I was 4 and she still have a little bit of trouble and there are times she wants me to translate for her and I force her to speak so she gets used to it.  This is why this program holds a special place in my heart because out of the kindness of their hearts they are willing to teach English.  They are wonderful and even serve them breakfast along with free bread if they want to take any home. They Also provide FREE childcare while your taking classes, which I volunteered the first hr doing.

Its such a wonderful community and I feel lucky to have been able to help.

I met a wonderful lady from Thailand at the program and my job was to have a conversation with her to help her practice, use some future tenses so I could see how she does. She was very very sweet and she did wonderful!! She even expressed to me how thankful she was that it was free , specially since she has a family and if she enrolled in school the scheduled would never work for her. We talked for about 45 min and I even gave her a ride home

I let her know that not matter what happens or how hard it might feel to keep going!

Before heading home I decided to take a pic of the people that made this program possible !!

Lil Gavin !

 

 

 

This was the first session I did with little Gavin.  He was a character!! Even at such a young age he had his own personalty!! I loved his session we had so much fun and Angela was such a sweet heart!! Then this summer I was contacted again to do his 1st Birthday picture !!! It is such a compliment when clients hire me again , because not only does it mean that they love my work, but they trust me to invest in me again When I saw Gavin  I couldn’t believe my eyes he had gotten so big!!!  I was so ecstatic to get started!! We drove to the location , which now has become one of my favs to shoot at !! Here are a few from his recent session .

BEST SWEET 16 :)

When you start a career as a photographer, you usually gain experience shooting weddings and other events through working with other companies. Which I did, I have shot over 12 or so sweet 16′s for other companies, but I had not done one for myself. When Natasha first contacted me about Allyson’s Sweet 16 I was BEYOND THRILLED !! By the way Thank You so much “CarSan ArtisticCakes” for the referral !! I honestly couldn’t of wished to have shot any other persons Sweet 16 as Forever Frozen then this one!! Allyson was the sweetest and her style rocked her party!! Her friends were loud and crazy and it was just perfect, I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time because this was just how I would of wanted my First Sweet 16 to be Thank You Guys and Enjoy your Preview!!!

“Why Not?”

If you ask any of my friends to describe me they will probably say I’m loud and crazy! haa haa I’m pretty proud to be those two because who wants to be quiet and boring?! These past 2 years have really changed my perspective on life. With my dads and my best friends death it has been really hard. Also this year, unfortunately I have also been attending a few funerals of friends from Highschool.  After someone close passes away you start to think of all the “what if’s?” What if when he asked me to go six flags I would have just went? What If I didn’t spend all that time arguing over something small we could have created more memories? What if I could of just lived in the present and not held so much against my father for what he had done? It’s these type of questions that really changed the way I look at life. The truth is you never really know when it will be  your time to go , and every minute of the day I try to make the most out of it. I try to volunteer as much as I can because I like knowing that I can make a difference. I try to never say no when one of my friends whats to do something  and I always try to be spontaneous when it comes to plans! I feel that’s where the BEST memories are made.

This is what my Sunday was all about, my friend Amanda wanted to go thrift store shopping! We decided to hit up at least 3-4 thrift stores, these are GREAT places for me to find new and different props ! After that I got a text message from my friend Sarah asking me if I wanted to take a drive to Nutley to what she describes “the best cupcake shop ever.”  The shop is called “stuffed cupcakes “, they serve everything from “Red Velvet” to “Banana Cream.”

I was a bit tired from the walking around I had done, but I asked my self “why not?” and I tagged along and we went!! There is a cupcake there that has a white chocolate covered bacon piece on it!! haa haa I wish I had taken a picture of it !  From there I went home and watched the 2nd to last episode of True Blood!! YES I’m a huge fan!!! Love me some Eric and Alcide!! Then around 10:30ish I was ready to go to bed, when my cousin texted me and asked me what I was doing and then suggested we grab coffee. Again I asked myself “Why not?” I picked her up and all of the sudden I got the crazy idea to just go to NY! My cousins face when I told her was priceless. She was expecting to go somewhere quiet to sit down and drink some coffee, and there I was letting her know we were on our way to the city that never sleeps!! We had such an amazing time!! Took us about 15 min to get there because there was no traffic, we parked about 4 blocks away from Times Square, and we walked around everywhere ,  NY was just as beautiful if not more then it was in the morning!

While we walked around a man approached us to see if we were interested in seeing a comedy show. I been approached by these guys many times and I always turn them down , I looked at my cousin and said . “why not?” It was only $10 and it was about 1hr and 30 min of entertainment. I had noooooo idea what to expect ,  but I knew no matter how bad it was or how funny it was it was a memory my cousin and I would never forget. AND WE WILL NOT!!!

We followed this man down these stairs to this basement , I know I know I should have turned around right there! We got our tickets and at this place there were several rooms that had different showing times, we had no idea were to go , so we enter this room and no lie there were about 100 people sitting there and a comedian was talking. As soon as we entered everything went silent and the comedian looked at us and said ,” you guys trying to sneak in ?”  Everyone started laughing , we sat down slowly and I asked the people next to us if I had the right showing and as they shook their head I knew we needed to get out of there with out being noticed. Which we were not able to do as the comedian cracked more jokes on us. As the door closed behind us I hugged my cousin and we couldn’t stop laughing , it was the funniest thing that happened to us that night!! When we finally found the right room we sat down and experianced and 1hr and 30 min of none stop laughing. We left there with our stomachs hurting and our cheeks sore from all the laughing we had done. This image is of the first comedian , I took with my iphone so I apologize for the quality.

 

 

 

After the show we spent a little more time in the city and headed home . It was an experience that I will never forget and neither will my cousin, and to think I could have easily just stayed home and gone to bed !

First Day of 4th Grade!!

Today is the first day of 4th grade for my little brother Manny!!! I am so excited for him , because honestly I kind of miss school. I know I know I say  this now !! Hee Hee !!  School beats being an adult any day !! Who doesn’t agree with me?! You have yummy snacks through out the day and get to stick your hand in a bag of surprises on your birthday and you have 30 min in the middle of the day to just run around!! I demand we get those at our jobs!! haa ha

 

I like to try to make it a tradition were I treat my brother out to breakfast on the first day of School and his last. I think in a way it sets the mood !! This morning I wanted to take him to a near by diner, but for some reason they were closed. I drove down the rd a bit and I remembered there was a yummy Colombian Bakery that serves breakfast!! We went in and my brother ordered an empanada and a very cheesy omelet over an Arepa!!! Even typing that makes me hungry , mmm I love arepas!!! If you haven’t ever had one they are yummy specially with cheese on top!!

 

After a quick breakfast we arrived at his new school and wished him a happy day !! I snapped a quick picture with my Iphone and here he is!!!

A Beautiful Session on a Beautiful Day :)

I had the pleasure of photographing Sarah’s little munchkin Tyler today and I got to sneak in a family picture that is prob one of my favs up to date.  The reason being that Sarah mentioned to me that she yet has a family picture where they are all together and smiling, and to be able to deliver something that she has wanted since her little one was born is one of the best feeling. I know that this picture will mean more to Sarah and Tim then any person looking at it and that is all that matters to me . Thank you so much Sarah for today and your beautiful preggo glow, your hubbys genuine smile and your little energetic rascal made me remember why I am so thankful for what I do .

When I was first contacted by Fabiana Mello to do her maternity pictures, I was so excited because of her beauty! But it wasn’t until I met her that I felt more then lucky that she choose me for this important moment in her life, Fabiana was so sweet and is such a kind-hearted person Her session had to be one of my favorite materni…ty session this year, she felt so comfortable with me and trusted in everything I told her to do which made it all worth it.
